Do you enjoy watching re-runs of your favorite television shows? They’re familiar and comforting. Similarly, like the television shows that are repeated, your thoughts go through your head over and over again. In fact, the majority of your thoughts are re-runs. The difference is that you are always free to change the channel or shut off the television, but your thoughts are less easily dismissed.
When you find yourself thinking about something negative that has no merit, figure out the trigger of the thought. When you know your triggers, you can substitute a new thought so that you think about something better. When you think more positively, your life will improve.
An example is that every time your boss messages you on Teams, you think “Oh, no. What does he want now?” You think the thought, and it creates fear. The trigger is the Teams message. But you can change the thought to: “I’m glad that my boss and I have a good working relationship.” Or you pass your mirror and think: “I probably gained weight.” Change it to: “I look great in this dress.” Those are just two examples, but you get the picture. When a negative thought pops into your mind, challenge it. If it’s not true nor helpful, but just a false re-run, replace it with a more positive true thought or an affirmation of something you’d like to bring into your experience.
When you stop negative, repetitive thoughts—the re-runs in your mind—you make room for positive ones, and that will make a big difference in how you feel.
